Regions

South West Tobago

Pigeon Point

At the southern tip of Tobago in Crown Point lies the international airport. This region is well developed for tourism with a choice of hotels from simple owner run hotels to larger all inclusive hotels on the beach. Store Bay is walking distance from town and has food stalls nearby serving local favourites such as Crab and Dumplings. Further along the coast from Store Bay is the Pigeon Point Heritage Park which encompasses a beautiful sandy beach and crystal clear swimming waters and there are changing facilities, lifeguards, watersports hire, sunbed hire and bars and cafes available. Glass bottomed boat tours are popular to snorkel at nearby Buccoo Reef.

The bays north of Pigeon Point include Mount Irvine Beach popular with surfers, and Turtle Beach and Stonehaven Bay both being popular beaches for Leatherback turtles coming ashore and laying their eggs. Responsible trips can be organised to witness these events in the nesting season between mid March and July.

Caribbean Coast

Castara Bay

Along the Caribbean coast of Tobago are numerous sandy beaches in coves reached by winding coastal roads and include Castara Bay, Englishman's Bay and Parlatuvier, there are also many snorkelling spots to explore along this stretch of coastline. Castara village is popular with visitors looking for a more authentic, off the beaten track destination. Villagers come together to pull in the seine nets in the evening and visitors can join in, there is also a bonfire on the beach once a week with dining. The village has recently been included in the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation) upgrade programme to become a Best Tourism Village which is awarded to villages that are an oustanding example of a rural tourism destination with recognised cultural and natural assets and a clear commitment to sustainability in all aspects.

Central Tobago

Main Ridge Forest Reserve

In the centre of Tobago is the the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, encompassing the single mountain range of the island and providing stunning views as you drive through the island. This forest reserve is the oldest known protected rainforest in the Caribbean and was set aside in 1776. It occupies a large part of central region of the island particularly towards the northern end and is home to many species of birds as well as animals such as nine banded armadillos and agoutis, as well as numerous snakes and lizards. Several trails run inside the reserve and a visit to the forest reserve with a guide will ensure you see plenty of native flora and fauna.

There are a number of waterfalls inland on Tobago, including the largest Argyle Falls which can be hiked to. Near the inland village of Moriah is the Cuffie River Nature Retreat, an excellent place to stay allowing guests to experience a different part of the island, with resident bird guides allowing you to appreciate the many bird species on their property as well as in the forest reserve.

Windward Coast

Little Tobago

The eastern windward coast of Tobago is more rugged than the leeward side of the island with wilder surf. The road that winds along the coast allows for a scenic drive to Roxborough and then on to Speyside at the northeastern tip of the island. Lying off the coast opposite Speyside is the island of Little Tobago, a protected bird sanctuary. Glass bottomed boats take visitors across to Little Tobago where you can walk up to a lookout point and see Red Billed Tropicbirds and Magnificent Frigate Birds circling, also rare Red Footed Boobies and Brown Boobies nesting on neighbouring little islands (binoculars or a scope needed). Between Little Tobago and Tobago lies the much smaller Goat Island and you can snorkel on Angel Reef in front of the island and this offers some of the best snorkelling in Tobago.
